“You make a difference. You are one person, but you made a difference to me.” That one comment made by a Special Olympics Athlete at one of our NTL events has influenced me to be more driven and motivated in things, like volunteer work, that I wouldn’t have been so devoted to before. Need to Lead has not only showed me the power of working together as a group, but also the potential and capacity you can have even as one person. I’m so lucky to have been introduced to this organization, because it really has helped shape who I am.

My time with Need To Lead really started in 2010 with the Special Olympics of Massachusetts’ Polar Plunge. At the time, I was a typical 15 year old looking for something ridiculous to do. What better way to fill that void than to jump into below freezing ocean water in the middle of winter? What I didn’t know at the time was the immense impact that Need to Lead would have on the next 5 years of my life. Since that day I’ve volunteered for numerous different organizations through my involvement in Need to Lead including: Cradles To Crayons, Walk for Alzheimer’s, Hemophilia Walk, the Stephen “Guy” DeForge Scholarship Fund, and the Special Olympics of Wisconsin.

The NTL events I have been part of have helped me to learn many things about both myself and others. When I go to these events, I almost always get to see two or three of the people that I am helping. This always puts a smile on my face because it is a different feeling when you get to see the people that all the work I am doing will benefit.

To me, Need To Lead is a team of volunteers that motivates student athletes to become actively involved in charitable initiatives within their communities. NTL creates opportunities for students to believe that they can help make a difference and inspire others to follow their lead.

Need To Lead has given me more perspective on life on how fortunate we really are. It has influenced me to give back to the community because I want to and for that has made me a better person. Even now in college I volunteer helping out young hockey players in the area.

My experience with Need to Lead began in 2008. I originally participated in NTL events so I could put charity work on my high school applications. In the seven years since, I have come to see how Need to Lead positively affects other charities and contributes to the success of their various events. As NTL provides the majority of volunteers for many events, our impact is felt by the charities as well as those who benefit from these charities. In my time with NTL I have worked with organizations like the Special Olympics, Alzheimer’s Association, National Hemophilia Foundation, and Cradles to Crayons and taken part in events such as the Polar Plunge as well as Alzheimer’s and Hemophilia Walks. My favorite event is always the Special Olympics in Brockton, MA each spring where the athletes emulate pure joy and volunteers are constantly reminded of our reasons for volunteering.

I have been involved with NTL since the sixth grade and most recently I have taken on the role of Director of Social Media. As the Director of Social Media, I have the responsibility of spreading the NTL message to as many people as possible.
I have been a part of the Need to Lead organization for six years. During this time I’ve also had the opportunity to involve many of my friends as well. I have recently been given the role of Student Director. With that role I have grown our local chapter by inviting students from several other schools to join Need to Lead as well.
I have been involved with need to lead for about 7 years, and my experiences in the organization have impacted my life in ways I never expected. Beginning at such a young age left an unknowing impact on my life that would come to manifest as I matured.
